A portion of my job involves driving to various locations. I use my own car and my manager reimburses me for gas money after I bring back receipts. I thought I was entitled to a specific mileage rate, not just gas money paid out of pocket. Is that true and if so, what should I do?
Yes, you are entitled to pay per mile driven for work-related duties if you use your personal vehicle. Your employer owes you more than just the gas you used. The mileage reimbursement also accounts for things like wear and tear to your vehicle. For the year 2020, the reimbursement rate for the use of a car for work purposes is 57.5 cents per mile. From now on, you should use your car’s trip odometer to record the miles you drive for work (not including your commute to and from work). Multiply the miles driven by 0.575 and that amount will be the dollars owed to you. If your employer refuses to reimburse you, you should call an employment attorney and see what options you have for recovery.
